About

This course is designed to equip professionals working with children and young people with the knowledge and skills needed to support healthy eating and understand the complex behaviours associated with food, nutrition, and eating disorders. Children in care and other vulnerable settings often present with challenging relationships with food due to trauma, attachment disruption, or mental health difficulties. These may include food hoarding, refusal to eat, restrictive diets, or diagnosable eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, or ARFID. Understanding these behaviours within a trauma-informed, safeguarding framework is vital for promoting emotional and physical wellbeing. Through a blend of theory, case studies, and practical strategies, learners will explore: Nutritional requirements across different developmental stages. The emotional and psychological impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on food-related behaviour. Early identification of disordered eating and the importance of timely intervention. Working with multi-agency partners to meet the child’s holistic needs. Cultural competence and inclusive practice in supporting dietary needs. This course aligns with UK legislation and regulatory frameworks, including the Children Act 1989/2004, the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015, and Ofsted’s expectations for promoting children’s health and wellbeing. Who is this course for? Residential childcare workers Foster carers Key workers and youth workers Teaching assistants and SEND support staff Social care professionals
