About

This course is designed for support workers working with care leavers and young adults in supported accommodation. It provides a comprehensive understanding of domestic abuse (also referred to as domestic violence), its history and scale, and its profound impact on children and young people. The course equips staff with practical strategies, procedures, and trauma-informed approaches to identify risk, respond safely, and support victims effectively. Domestic abuse is defined as any incident of threatening behaviour or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial, and emotional) between adults who have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. Although domestic abuse occurs between adults, its impact on children and young people—including care leavers—is significant and long-lasting. Support workers play a vital role in recognising harm, offering stability, and promoting recovery.
